Title: Workplace Violence Prevention Program at the FCC
Agency: Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
Requirement: Develop and implement a program to prevent violence at the FCC.
Solution: Develop, implement, and evaluate a workplace violence prevention program.

Recent surveys suggest that about one in twenty employees in the general population experience some form of physical violence on the job each year. Examples of violence include thrown objects, pushing, grabbing, slapping, hitting, beating, rape, and the threat of use of weapons. Furthermore, about one-third of workers report verbal abuse on the job each year. These incidents include provoking arguments, calling names, putting people down in front of others, swearing, and making intimidating gestures.

JPS began conducting a study June of 2001 to evaluate the most critical threats that FCC personnel face and the methods currently in place to manage these threats.

JPS interviewed personnel, analyzed incident reports, reviewed building security procedures, and conducted a benchmark study.

In August of 2001 JPS issued a report advising steps the FCC could take to better prevent workplace violence, respond to a crisis, and recover after an incident occurred.  JPS recommendations included the establishment of a zero-tolerance policy, employee and supervisory training, and creation of a threat assessment team.
